August 27 - 28, 2010 glaciologists from all over the world will celebrate Sigfus J. Johnsens 70 years birthday with a Symposium in Reykjavik on ice cores and climate studies.

About 35 staff members from the Centre for Ice and Climate will on August 27-28
participate in a symposium held in honour of glaciologist Sigfus J. Johnsen, who is
now retiring from his position at the University of Copenhagen.

Working with Willi Dansgaard in the 1960s, Sigfus became involved in the ice coring work in Greenland at an early stage, and over the past 40 years he has co-led the development of drilling techniques at UCPH.

Sigfus has contributed heavily to various fields of paleoclimate studies on ice cores, with special focus on oxygen isotope studies.

He is the a recipient of the International Glaciological Society´s Seligman Crystal (1997), the Hans Oeschger medal of the European Geophysical Society (2003) and was made Knight of the Order of Dannebrog by Queen Margrethe II in the year 2000.
